Living Without a Car: US Cities to Consider

New York City is one of the strongest choices in the United States if you want to rely on walking and transit: its subway and buses connect many neighborhoods, and everyday essentials are often close to home. Chicago, Washington, DC, Boston, Philadelphia, and San Francisco can also work well, particularly when you choose a neighborhood near frequent transit, groceries, and the places you visit most.

New York may suit you if broad transit coverage matters more than having extra space, while Chicago and Philadelphia may appeal if you want a mix of walkable neighborhoods and rail service. If you work from home, a neighborhood with groceries, a pharmacy, and social activities nearby may matter more than a fast downtown commute; if you commute in person, test the actual trip at the hours you would travel.

A transit-friendly city can still have neighborhoods where errands require long walks or multiple transfers, so start your search with a specific address rather than a citywide ranking. Map a typical week from that address—including work, food shopping, medical appointments, and evening plans—and note service frequency, walking routes, and your options when transit runs less often.

If possible, spend several days making ordinary trips without a car, including one grocery run and one trip after dark, to see whether the routine feels comfortable to you. Our team also recommends comparing the full monthly picture—housing, transit, occasional rides, and any car-sharing needs—rather than assuming that giving up a car will make every city affordable; for trip-planning ideas, you can explore our Anywhere Without a Car — Ultimate Guide on How to Plan a Trip Using Only Public Transport for Stress-Free Travel alongside our guide to cities that are good for living without a car.
