Who Is in the Jet Set in Mad Men? Key Characters

In “The Jet Set”, Don Draper and Pete Campbell travel to California for an aerospace convention, but they approach the trip differently. Pete stays focused on business, while Don is drawn away from the convention—and from his usual responsibilities—by a group of wealthy travelers he meets there.

Joy is the young woman who invites Don into the jet set, a circle whose members move between destinations with apparent ease and few visible obligations. Her father, the Viscount, is part of the group, and their leisurely way of life offers Don a sharp contrast to the schedules, clients, and family tensions waiting for him back in New York.

The episode also follows characters Don leaves behind: Betty Draper is dealing with a consequential change in her family life, while Peggy Olson navigates work and her own sense of identity. Their stories matter because Don’s California escape is only one part of the episode; back home, other people must continue making decisions without him.

The jet set is not Don and Pete’s company or a formal club: it refers to Joy’s privileged, mobile social circle and the freedom it seems to represent. If you are planning a real trip rather than following Don’s detour, our team’s The Jet-Set Nomad’s AI Flight-Finding Checklist is a digital download focused on flight planning for digital nomads; the show’s version of spontaneous travel is better understood as a character choice than a practical itinerary.
