How to Identify Your Small Business Target Audience
Start with the problem you solve
Find evidence in real decisions
Look for recurring questions in sales conversations, support requests, reviews, and relevant community discussions. If your business is new, ask potential buyers about the last time they tried to solve the problem. Their recent actions can reveal alternatives, constraints, and priorities more clearly than a hypothetical purchase question.

Build a profile you can use
For each potential customer group, record the need that starts their search, what matters most, their current alternative, what could prevent a purchase, and where they look for solutions. Note the source of each answer and flag your assumptions. Include age, location, or job title only when it affects the need, access to your offer, or the buying decision.
Our downloadable target audience checklist and eBook can help you keep those questions together as you work. Use the profile to guide what you say and where you say it—not simply to describe a person.
Choose one group and run a small test
Compare groups by strength of need, fit with your offer, ability to reach them, and signs they may buy. Then choose one group. Write a message that names their situation, problem, and relevant benefit, and place it in a channel they use to find solutions.
Decide in advance what action matters, such as a qualified inquiry, sign-up, or purchase. Record what you expect, what happens, and what you will change. Views alone do not establish demand. As inquiries and purchases reveal new patterns, update your profile and test again.
Turn the profile into a small marketing test
Draft one message that names the situation, the problem, and the benefit you provide. For the lunch example: “Need lunch between meetings? Get a dependable weekday option without spending your whole break deciding.” Choose a channel because your evidence suggests that group uses it to find solutions—not because it is popular in general.
Keep the test limited. You could try two versions of that message on one channel and define one action to measure, such as a qualified inquiry, sign-up, or purchase. Before the test, record what you expect; afterward, record what happened and what you will change next time.
Keep your customer checklist current
Revisit your profile as inquiries and purchases reveal new patterns. The goal is a useful working description that improves decisions, not a perfect portrait completed in one sitting. Choose one candidate audience, document the evidence behind it, and test one message.

Before choosing, compare the product details with your daily routine, available space, care needs, and preferred setup. The strongest option is usually the one that fits the intended use clearly and remains simple to clean, store, and check before repeat use.
FAQ
What’s your ideal of a man?
There is no universal ideal; the qualities someone values depend on their own relationships and priorities. For business planning, describe customers by relevant needs and decisions rather than an idealized type of person.
What would be your ideal?
For a first customer group, our ideal is one with a clear need we can serve, a practical way to reach them, and evidence that they may purchase.
How is your ideal person?
For marketing, focus less on an ideal person’s traits and more on the situation that makes your offer useful, who decides to buy, and what evidence supports that description.
