Does Your Parents’ Insurance End When You Turn 26?

Turning 26 does not always end coverage that day

No, you do not necessarily lose your parents’ health insurance on your 26th birthday. Under federal rules, you can generally stay on a parent’s plan until you turn 26, but the date coverage actually ends depends on the plan: an employer-sponsored plan may end it on your birthday or at the end of that month, while a Health Insurance Marketplace plan generally keeps you covered through December 31 of the year you turn 26.

Confirm your exact end date

We recommend asking your parent’s benefits administrator or insurance company for your last day of coverage in writing rather than planning around an assumed date. Ask separately about medical, dental, and vision benefits, since they may not all end at the same time. If you have prescriptions, appointments, or ongoing treatment, compare a new plan’s provider network and drug coverage before your current coverage expires.

Arrange replacement coverage before you need it

Aging out of a parent’s plan generally qualifies you for a special enrollment period, so you do not necessarily have to wait for annual open enrollment. Marketplace enrollment is generally available from 60 days before to 60 days after you lose coverage; if you can join an employer plan, contact its benefits team promptly about its deadline, which is generally at least 30 days after the loss. When comparing options, look at the date your new coverage would begin as well as the premium, deductible, and care you expect to use.

Plan separately for a baby’s coverage

If you are expecting a baby, do not assume your parent’s plan will cover your child, even while it still covers you. Ask the insurer what applies to your care and what separate enrollment your baby will need, including the deadline after birth. Our team covers newborn enrollment steps in our baby health insurance guide; we also offer Baby Health Insurance Made Simple, a digital guide for new parents.

Do I lose my parents’ insurance on my 26th birthday?

Not necessarily; your plan may keep you covered beyond your birthday. Confirm its termination date so you know when replacement coverage needs to start.
